Understanding Coverage with Stroke / TIA

If you've been managing Stroke / TIA and were told you can't get life insurance, that's not the full story. Large direct-to-consumer carriers run conservative underwriting that screens out many manageable conditions. The independent market is much broader — and we work with every carrier in it.

What Underwriters Look For

For stroke and TIA survivors, underwriters evaluate: type (ischemic vs hemorrhagic), recovery status, residual deficits, time since event, current medications, and recurrence risk. Stable recovery with medication qualifies for standard coverage with several carriers.

Tips for Applying

Be upfront about your condition. The carriers on this page already know they're writing people with Stroke / TIA. Misrepresentation can void your policy when your family needs it most.

Have your medication list ready. The application asks what you take and who prescribes it. Having this handy cuts the process from 20 minutes to 10.

Don't wait. Rates increase with every birthday. A 55-year-old pays significantly less than a 60-year-old for identical coverage.

Stroke / TIA Insurance FAQ

Can I get life insurance with Stroke / TIA?

Yes. 7 of our 8 carriers offer coverage options for Stroke / TIA. For severe or recently diagnosed cases, Guaranteed Issue coverage is available with no health questions at all.

Will I pay more because of Stroke / TIA?

It depends on the carrier and severity. Standard Issue rates for managed conditions are often close to standard rates. Guaranteed Issue rates are set by age only, not by condition. Either way, coverage at a higher rate protects your family better than no coverage.

What if I use tobacco and have Stroke / TIA?

Most carriers charge higher rates for tobacco use. However, our Guaranteed Issue option doesn't ask about tobacco — smokers and non-smokers pay the same rate.

What if I've already been declined?

A decline from one carrier doesn't mean you're uninsurable. Each carrier has different guidelines. We work with carriers that specialize in conditions others decline. A previous decline does not affect eligibility with our carriers.

How much coverage should I get?

For final expense coverage, $15,000-$25,000 is typical — covering funeral costs, medical bills, and giving your family breathing room. For income replacement, 10x annual income is a common guideline.

Insurance products are underwritten by the respective carriers shown. Velocity Pro is a licensed insurance broker, not an insurance company. Rates are subject to underwriting approval. Coverage and availability vary by state.
